Managing Fibro with Modifiers

10/21/2018

Lots of people with chronic illnesses like Fibromyalgia use modifiers to help make their lives easier day-to-day. Some use canes, wheelchairs, or other mobility assistance options, and lots of us have purchased items modified to make life easier, like laundry baskets with wheels, easy-open bottles, things like that. And more often than not, even our rooms are modified or set up in such a way as to be as helpful or comfortable as possible- like, pillows with arms and lap desks so you can use your computer in bed comfortably should you be stuck in bed for long periods of time.

I personally have done this a lot (as in, all examples above except the mobility aids are things I have or I’ve done, as you’ll see), and I’m curious about what ways or tools or things others may use to help make life a little easier.
Some of my life modifiers are below, do you have any of your own you'd like to share? Let us know in the comments below!
  • Laundry: we already covered this, but it was a breakthrough for me years ago when I bought a laundry basket with wheels so I didn’t have to carry it. Living in an apartment, this was a huge help!
  • Room: I set my room up to best serve how much time I spend in bed. I set up the dresser in front of my bed with my tv (with DVD player and wii) on it bc it’s the perfect height for my tv so I can watch tv in bed. As previously mentioned, I have a pillow with arms and tons of pillows to prop me up, a lap desk, and a bed table for when I’m in bed. I have things stashed all over the room to help me occupy my mind while I’m physically in bed- coloring books, craft supplies, books, things like that.
  • Meals: I buy a lot of pre-made salads and meals from the market because a lot of it is fresh (depending on where you go and what you buy) and that way you eat semi-healthy and save some energy. I rarely have the entropy make a good meal, and this has helped me a lot. I know some people who have signed up for grocery delivery services or buy food online so they don’t have to extend as much energy shopping, and even doing this once a month can be helpful if you can’t afford it all the time.  Also take-away app and delivery options are more popular than ever. There’s lots of options out there for different budgets which is great!
  • Shopping: I prefer shopping in stores, but shopping online can be a big help! Anything you need and you don’t have to leave the house, you can even have it next day- we all see the argument for this.

Gentle hugs,
